Product description
This unique Borek Šípek cheese dome is a collector's item designed by the world-famous Czech architect and designer Bořek Šípek in the 1990s.
It was commissioned by the Dutch chemical and biotech company DSM.
At the time, the object was given as an exclusive corporate gift or annual ornament to the company's employees and business associates.
The design combines the porcelain tray with the characteristic glass art for which Bořek Šípek became world-famous.
Although this object was designed by Czech designer Bořek Šípek as an artistic utilitarian object, it has a highly functional and well-thought-out design.
These are the main functions of the various components:
1. As a Cheese or Butter Dome (The main function)
* The Tray: The white porcelain surface in the center serves as the base on which you can present cheese or butter.
* The Glass Dome: The heavy glass dome covers the food. This prevents cheese from drying out and keeps odors inside the dome (very useful with strong cheeses).
* The Flower Handle: The green glass flower on top serves as an ergonomic handle for easily lifting the heavy dome.
2. As a Serving Platter for Appetizers or Tapas
* The Four Bowls: The round recesses on the corners of the porcelain platter are specifically designed for side dishes. Think of:
* Olives, nuts, or pearl onions.
* Dips or mustard for cheese.
* Grapes or other small fruits.
3. Multifunctional Use of the Glass Dome
* Inverted Bowl: A unique feature of many Šípek designs is its versatility. The glass dome can be inverted and rested on the flower handle. This transforms the dome into a separate serving dish for salads or fruit, for example.
4. As a Decorative Art Object
* Due to its postmodern design and striking colors, many collectors display this piece purely as a decorative piece in a display case or on a dresser.
It is made with a green and a red flower.
This piece is in beautiful, undamaged condition, with the occasional air bubble inherent to the production process.
It comes with the original transport "case" and the original (slightly damaged) brochure, which also serves as the Certificate of Authenticity.
