Imposing Pair of Italian Art Deco Black Lacquered Sideboards (1930s) – Monumental Geometric Crystal Mirror Set – Attributed to the Circle of Osvaldo Borsani, Paolo Buffa, Ulrich Guglielmo & Quirino Quarti
Description:
An exceptionally rare and authoritative pair of monumental Italian Art Deco cabinets dating from the late 1930s, showcasing the absolute pinnacle of pre-war avant-garde master cabinetry from the Lombardy/Milanese region. Due to the architectural rigor of its sharp geometric proportions, the sophisticated purity of its sculptural volumes, and the masterful integration of high-end artistic crystal, this investment-grade ensemble carries heavy stylistic attributions to the coeval design circle of Osvaldo Borsani (Arredamenti Borsani Varedo), Paolo Buffa, and the elite execution standards of Quirino Quarti.
Departing from the common burr walnut aesthetics of the era, this set embraces a striking black lacquered finish—a sophisticated modernist statement chosen by elite designers to bridge late Art Deco with the architectural rigor of early Rationalism. The visual presence relies on a powerful monochromatic armor with clean, linear profiles resting upon layered plinth bases. The main credenza stands out with its central section opening via sliding glass doors over a double drawer bank with elegant curved bridge handles, while the matching twin sideboard reveals a pristine, white-lined functional pull-out serving tray designed for high-society entertaining.
The crowning jewel of the ensemble is the magnificent, heavy crystal mirror plate crowning the larger unit. It showcases the highly coveted emerald-green edge highlight (“filo verde”), the unmistakable material hallmark of premier artistic glassworks of the era, such as Luigi Fontana. The mirror surface features subtle, diamond-cut geometric linear incised grids that elegantly frame the piece. A key collectors' highlight is the mounting hardware: the heavy plate is mechanically suspended via its original, custom-machined pass-through slotted metal buttons, meticulously engineered with period washers to prevent tension cracks, sealing the absolute authenticity of the pre-war commission.
Condition & Vintage Patina Note (Strictly Sold As-Found):
Both architectural pieces stand in excellent vintage preservation state, showcasing high-end, rock-solid pre-war structural integrity and engineering. As genuine, untouched items nearly ninety years old, the black lacquered surfaces and the authentic Luigi Fontana crystal mirror display a beautiful historical patina with honest signs of age, minor superficial wear, and historical marks. This natural vintage character strictly highlights their untouchable antiquity and pedigree, separating them from modern replicas. The interior storage configuration is preserved in its authentic, unaltered vintage status.
Broker & Collector Note: An architectural statement set of massive visual impact and presence. The monochromatic black lacquer linear geometry combined with the presence of a verified geometric crystal mirror and the elite connection to the Milanese avanguardia (Borsani, Buffa, Quarti) makes this pair an elite acquisition asset for international collections and high-end contemporary art spaces.
