Product description
Boch Frères Keramis – Art Deco Pitcher by Raymond Chevalier, C. 1930s A striking and highly decorative Art Deco ceramic pitcher by Boch Frères Keramis, La Louvière, designed during the period associated with Raymond Chevalier, one of the most important designers in the history of the Belgian manufactory. The pitcher has a particularly elegant and unmistakably Art Deco silhouette: a rounded lower body contrasts with the tall, flaring neck, while the long angular handle gives the piece a strong architectural character. The form is further accentuated by generous gold decoration along the handle, rim and central band. Its most remarkable feature is the exceptionally rich polychrome decoration, executed in the manner of cloisonné enamel. Large stylised flowers and foliage are outlined by fine dark contours and arranged against a deep cobalt-blue ground, interwoven with warm ochre geometric elements. Pale blue, turquoise, green and vivid yellow details create a remarkably sophisticated palette. The density and precision of the decoration give the surface an almost jewel-like appearance and are highly characteristic of the luxurious decorative language developed at Boch Frères during the Art Deco period. The pitcher remains in good vintage condition, especially considering its age of almost a century. There is a manufacturing/firing crack visible on the inside, shown clearly in the photographs. It is not a through-crack and originates from the firing process rather than later damage. The gilding shows some expected rubbing and wear, particularly along exposed areas, entirely consistent with the age and use of the piece. The underside bears the original Boch Frères – La Louvière – Made in Belgium factory mark, confirming its origin. Founded in the 19th century, Boch Frères Keramis in La Louvière became one of Belgium’s most significant ceramic manufactories. Its Art Deco production reached a particularly creative period under Raymond Chevalier, whose designs combined modern geometric forms with highly sophisticated floral and polychrome decoration. Pieces of this quality illustrate the distinctive Belgian interpretation of Art Deco and are increasingly sought after by collectors of European ceramics and interwar design. With its rare decoration, recognisable Art Deco form and elaborate cloisonné-style treatment, this pitcher is both a highly collectible example of Boch Frères production and a spectacular decorative object capable of making a strong statement in a contemporary interior.
