He is sitting on his rustic stool, straw hat tilted, ochre jacket open over a white vest, light blue trousers, black shoes. In one hand, a curved pipe. In the other, an open book. He is not looking, he is contemplating. This old country sage has something of Montaigne in his tower, or La Fontaine under his oak tree. The figurine is made of biscuit porcelain, this unglazed fine porcelain or earthenware whose matte and soft-to-the-touch surface gives flesh tones and fabrics a warmth that glaze does not possess. The polychromy is delicate and soft, the facial details are meticulously rendered, the grey beard depicted with precision. Quality production, in the tradition of European genre figurines from the 1970s-1990s. Height approximately 11 cm. Figurine intact, vivid paint.
