Product description
A matching pair of antique ornaments, crafted from water buffalo horn (kerbau), attributed to Java, Indonesia, and dating to the late 19th to early 20th century.
Both objects are richly hand-engraved and depict stylized figures characteristic of the Javanese wayang tradition. The elongated limbs, profiled heads, and ceremonial postures are reminiscent of the visual language of Javanese shadow theatre (wayang kulit).
The top is openwork, and both ornaments have a natural, unrestored patina with signs of wear consistent with their age and material. The two pieces were clearly crafted as a matching pair and preserved together, with a strong similarity in size, shape, and patina.
Originally, these objects likely had a ceremonial or representative function. Today, they are primarily of interest as collector's items or as sculptural objects with a distinct historical and cultural significance.
Condition
Good antique condition with signs of age and wear consistent with their age and material. No restorations observed.
