Description: Offered for sale: a magnificent oil painting on canvas (mounted on panel) by the Spanish artist Ángel Simarro. This work from 2015 is a technically high-quality interpretation of the world-famous masterpiece "El mercader de zapatillas" (1872) by José Villegas Cordero, which is part of the permanent collection of the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore.
The painting: The scene depicts a merchant in a moment of rest, smoking a long pipe. The power of this work lies in the incredible details and textures: from the hand-knotted carpets and leather slippers to the gleaming copper bowls. Simarro plays masterfully with the light, which falls from the left and gives the space a warm, almost tangible atmosphere.
