Beautiful Large Louis XV-Style Tête-à-Tête Corbeille Sofa / Conversation Sofa
Origin & Style
An impressive and generous piece of furniture executed in the classic Louis XV style (Rococo Revival). The sofa is designed as a tête-à-tête or corbeille sofa: the armrests gently curve inwards, causing sitters to automatically turn subtly towards each other. This design originally stems from French salon culture and was specifically intended to encourage intimate and comfortable conversations.
Age & Materials
Dating: Late 19th / early 20th century (approx. 1890–1920).
Frame: Artfully carved solid wood (walnut/mahogany) with richly detailed openwork carving of acanthus leaves, rocaille motifs, and a striking grape cluster at the top of the rail.
Upholstery: Tufted velvet-like velour fabric in a light cream shade, finished with brass decorative nails.
Features & Seating Comfort
With its length of 190 cm and height of 110 cm, this is a very sturdy, heavy, and robust piece of furniture of excellent quality. Unlike many antique sofas that often sit very stiff and straight, this piece has a fine, deep seat (62 cm) and a slightly curved backrest. This provides the sofa with surprisingly much comfort and a relaxed sitting experience.
Application & Interior Advice
Due to its imposing appearance, a sofa like this traditionally stood in a stately reception hall, gentleman's room, or spacious salon. Today, it is a fantastic statement piece for various interiors:
Beautiful in a classic or eclectic mansion.
A stylish eye-catcher for a boutique hotel, exclusive showroom, lounge, or hospitality venue.
Dimensions:
Length: 190 cm
Height: 110 cm
Depth: 90 cm
Seat height: 50 cm
Seat depth: 62 cm
Important note about the photos (AI visualizations):
The re-upholstered 4 photos in the gallery have been generated with the help of AI as inspiration. These images show how fantastic this sofa looks when it is re-upholstered (for example, with a distinctive peacock, jaguar, or modern velvet fabric) and placed in a contemporary interior. This way, you combine the authentic, heavy wood carving with an interior that meets all modern styling requirements.
Condition:
The wooden frame is in a very sturdy and good condition with characteristic signs of age appropriate for its age. The current fabric shows slight wear and patina (suitable for re-upholstery or direct use for lovers of original condition).
Shipping & Transport:
Packaging: The sofa will be professionally and extremely carefully packed with high-quality protective and packing materials.
Transport: Transport takes place on a pallet, with the sofa secured and fastened upright on its side due to its generous dimensions.
Delivery: Delivery is carried out by a specialized freight service. Please note: delivery is to the first door / on the curb at street level.
Important for the buyer: As it is a large, heavy, and robust sofa, we strongly advise ensuring sufficient help on site to safely carry and set up the furniture piece indoors.
