This spectacular French oil on canvas, signed Mainié in the lower left corner, depicts a pleasant and picturesque coastal scene with fishing boats on the sand, small houses, and a rocky landscape in the background. It focuses on capturing the beauty of the landscape, without any apparent message or social commentary, an aspect that links it to Post-Impressionism. Furthermore, the way in which the drawing is gradually dissolved by the simplification of the figures into patches of color is also noteworthy. The various figures of houses, boats, and rocks dissolve into small, quick dabs of color that bring the work to life.
The vibrant colors add dynamism to the scene. The brushstrokes are loose and visible, typical of the Impressionists, with considerable texture, which reinforces the sense of movement and light. It is a piece that conveys calm with a serene and balanced composition, where the only thing that matters is the contemplation of its beauty.
