The Balto brand, created in the 1930s by the French tobacco board (SEITA), was one of the most popular cigarettes of the post-war period. Its "Goût Américain – American Blend" positioning catered to the 1940s-1950s craze for American-style blonde tobaccos. This flattened rectangular lithographed tin box (15 x 12 cm) is a direct testament to that era. The bright red background, the central cream band with its three-masted sailboat in black and gold, the sober Art Deco typography with spaced letters – all combine to create an elegant and immediately identifiable design. The golden interior bears the complete marking: Cigarettes Balto – Goût Américain – American Blend – Régie Française, entirely legible. Very significant flaking and oxidation on the lid and base.
