Product description
Engels (1942) only started painting later in life. After her secondary school education, she studied Italian. As a visual artist, she is self-taught. She first did a lot of television work, having wonderfully rolled into it as a young woman by participating in a quiz by Theo Eerdmans 'Tel uit je winst'. She won that quiz with the subject of ancient Egypt, specializing in Tutankhamun. After her television work, she set up her own public relations agency. It was only in 1986, after selling her agency, that she began to intensively dedicate herself to painting. Almost spontaneously, images of antiquity – her great passion – emerged. In addition to painting, she made many trips to places where the remains of ancient civilizations can be found, such as Italy, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, and a dozen other countries. All these experiences and impressions then came to life in her paintings. Her paintings possess a magical spiritual charge that, in turn, inspires others. Masterfully, she uses ancient sources of inspiration to build a bridge between present and past, between reality and fantasy. By using self-developed techniques, her paintings have a fresco-like quality, making them appear as if they come directly from antiquity. In addition to her paintings, several years ago she began producing stone lithographs in collaboration with master printer Gert Jan Forrer. In 1992, she received the Movado Museum Prize. In May 2009, Astrid Engels was awarded the title of Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
