Product description
Against the deep black of this box, a large red rose stands out, surrounded by a branch and foliage composed of mother-of-pearl fragments with particularly luminous reflections. Depending on the light, the inlays shift from green to blue, from pink to gold, and give the decoration a depth that is reinforced by the contrast with the glossy black lacquer. The red flower, widely spread across the lid, brings a particularly successful graphic presence to the piece. The decoration is part of the long Asian tradition of mother-of-pearl inlay on lacquer, a craftsmanship particularly developed in Japan as well as in Korea, and which continued to be used in the 20th century for making boxes and small decorative objects. Its rectangular format and its entirely lacquered interior made it suitable for use as a jewelry box, a correspondence box, or a small personal casket. The box is preserved in very good condition, with only slight traces of use consistent with its age. The lacquer retains a beautiful depth, and the mother-of-pearl decoration its remarkable iridescent effects. Dimensions: approximately 18 × 10 cm, height 4 cm.
