Artifort Model 030 - 1964 - Hotel Cocagne Dining Chair - Herman Bakker/Theo Ruth. Unique pieces that are rarely offered for sale.
Herman Bakker is regarded as the post-war reconstruction architect in the Netherlands. In addition to his designs in Rotterdam, such as the Zuidplein shopping center and the Maastoren flats, he was asked to design a new hotel in Eindhoven: Hotel De Cocagne.
This was commissioned by Philips and intended to accommodate Philips guests. Besides the exterior, Bakker also designed the interior, down to parts of the furniture.
Artifort, Model 030, was designed by him and served as a chair in the restaurant of Hotel Cocagne. Theo Ruth created the working drawings. It was a project commission for Artifort, although they published Model 030 in their 1964 catalog.
That is according to the Artifort (overview) book from 1990 by Ewald Jamin et al. (Uitgeverij 010). The unique chairs—if they still exist, they are rarely offered for sale—carry the history of the reconstruction, the rise of the Philips corporation, and the growing importance of Eindhoven.
These chairs came into possession in 1992.
Around 2003, the chairs were reupholstered and restored. The original screws were used for this. After all these years, the leather has sustained some signs of wear but is still completely intact.
Only one chair still has the Artifort/Wagemans Maastricht plaque.
