This is an antique tea glass holder, originating from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire during the Art Nouveau period of the early 1900s. Known as a 'podstakannik' in Slavic cultures, this type of object was a staple of tea service, designed to protect the hands from a hot glass. Its form and decoration are characteristic of the era's design sensibilities.
The holder is crafted from brass and features a cylindrical body with a simple, elegant handle. The upper portion is adorned with an embossed band of geometric and stylized patterns, a hallmark of the Art Nouveau style that blended organic forms with structured design. This piece was made to encase a standard tea glass, a common practice in the cafes and homes of Central and Eastern Europe at the turn of the 20th century.
The piece presents with a deep and authentic patina that has developed over more than a century, attesting to its age and history of use. It remains in its original, unrestored condition, preserving the character it has acquired over time. The surface tells a story of its journey through the decades.
As a decorative object, this tea glass holder brings a touch of historical elegance to a desk, bookshelf, or display cabinet. It can be used as a pen holder or paired with a simple glass to be used for its intended purpose, adding a unique element to a classic or eclectic interior setting.
