This Art Deco biscuit box is a piece of domestic woodworking of understated and refined elegance. The rectangular box, made of light wood (beech or maple), rests on two turned wooden side feet with concentric fluting – a typically Art Deco decorative detail that elevates the object above a mere utensil. The lid slides in glass grooves, allowing the contents to be seen without opening it. This ingenious system, both practical and decorative, was highly valued in bourgeois interiors of the 1930s-1940s for presenting biscuits, petits fours, or confectionery at receptions. The cylindrical turned handle with fluting, attached to the lid, completes the ensemble with perfect stylistic coherence. The exterior of the box is stained midnight blue, while the interior is left in natural light wood. This contrast of materials and tones is characteristic of Art Deco taste for two-tone effects and unexpected combinations. Complete with its original glass, in good condition. Length 23 cm, height approximately 10 cm.
