Two angelfish in full motion, captured in the momentum of their swim. Sculptor M. Font, a French animalier artist active in the 1920s-1930s, belongs to the lineage of great bronziers of the interwar period who made wildlife their preferred subject. In the tradition of Bugatti, Pompon, or Sandoz, he captures the animal in its purest truth, without anecdote or artifice. Here, the angelfish's fins unfurl like sails stretched by the current. The treatment of volumes is of absolute sobriety. It is the very essence of French Art Deco animalier style. The bronze with a brown-black patina, featuring golden reflections on the edges of the fins, rests on a solid Portoro marble base, black veined with gold and white, extracted from the quarries of Porto Venere in Italy. This combination of materials is a signature of major decorative productions of the interwar period. The signature M. Font is engraved directly into the bronze, clearly legible, a guarantee of authenticity. Dimensions: approximately 33 cm in height, base approximately 30 cm in length. Condition: very good condition. Slight wear on the underside of the base, without affecting the sculpture. Placed on a living room cabinet or an entrance console, this sculpture commands a silent and elegant presence. It also perfectly complements a curio cabinet or a tastefully decorated library.
