This complete appetizer set is a fine example of Art Deco's penchant for geometry and contrasting materials. The dark stained wooden tray, with its clean, straight lines, features two hinged side flaps that allow it to be folded closed for storage. A removable central carved wooden handle, adorned with an incised diamond pattern, elegantly completes the set. The five molded pressed glass dishes, with their uniform vertical fluting, fit perfectly into the tray. Two large rectangular dishes, two medium, and one small central dish create a functional and harmonious set, where the transparency of the glass interacts with the dark wood in a material dialogue highly characteristic of the 1930s-1940s. This type of set was designed to present olives, gherkins, radishes, and other appetizers at receptions. It embodies the refinement of the French bourgeois table of the interwar period, when the art of entertaining was a discipline in its own right. Complete set, in good condition. Open tray dimensions: approximately 38 x 30 cm.
