Special Art Deco ceramic vase/lidded jar – urn shape – possibly Dutch, approx. 1920–1940. A characterful and somewhat mysterious ceramic vase or lidded jar with a strong geometric, urn-shaped design. The object is made of earthenware with a warm cream-colored base and a rich reddish-brown to caramel-colored glaze. Especially the combination of the simple, powerful form and the dark glaze gives the piece a distinct Art Deco look.This object may originally have been manufactured as an urn or lidded jar, although its precise original function cannot be determined with certainty. The closed, tall shape, the wide base, and especially the characteristic conical knob on the lid strongly resemble such urn-shaped ceramic objects. It could therefore possibly have been intended as both a decorative vase/lidded jar and an urn.This object is reminiscent of the style of Dutch Art Deco ceramics from the 1920s–1930s, as produced by well-known pottery centers in Gouda, Arnhem, and Maastricht, among others. However, the subdued color scheme and geometric shape deviate from the more exuberantly painted pottery associated with these factories. A specific manufacturer cannot therefore be identified with certainty; no clear factory mark or signature is visible on the underside.The piece could possibly originate from the production of a Dutch pottery or smaller ceramic factory, but other European origins cannot be ruled out. The design shows the sober transition from decorative earthenware to the more modernist ceramics of the interwar period.The surface shows an attractive appearance created by age and use, with the reddish-brown glaze locally showing a subtle varied structure.
