Product description
Armchair Le Grand Foulard Material: wood, painted red and white Material origin: meadow near Gorinchem Dimensions: 99 cm wide × 88 cm deep × 76 cm high Year: 2010 Le Grand Foulard is made of wooden planks that went out of use from around 2004 due to European road safety regulations. These regulations included requirements for splinter safety in collisions and visibility through reflective materials, so this type of red and white painted wood was discarded en masse. A large quantity of this material was found in a meadow, visibly graying and weathered from prolonged exposure to the elements. This armchair is the most intensely worked object in the series. The originally six-foot-long planks were first sawn into red and white pieces, then into strips four inches wide. Then construction began: a careful process of restructuring and placement. The distinctive line between red and white was created by draping an actual grand foulard (a large cloth) over and into the frame; the resulting shape was transferred to the wood. Red and white panels were cut exactly along this line and fit together like a puzzle. The armchair is the result of an investigation into comfortable sitting on hard material. The basic arrangement with seat, back and armrests was adjusted repeatedly over the course of a year. Only after curves, dimensions, inclination angles and mutual proportions were determined did the final design of the armchair emerge. Technique used Le Grand Foulard is manufactured using traditional craft techniques. The slats and panels are joined with dominoes (flat dowels) and glue, all corners are mitred and nowhere is sawn headwood visible. From the design, the miter angle was determined to be 47°. The aim of this method was to achieve a construction that is technically optimal and guarantees a very long service life. Series Together with two other armchairs, Le Grand Foulard forms a trio in which different possibilities of reclaimed material are shown. Later, the series was expanded to include a model in MDF. This model was offered as a small canvas to the Rotterdam graffiti collective Lastplak, which provided the object with a distinct visual language. Packaging and transport Packaging is not included. A suitable solution would be a wooden crate. Pick-up in the studio is therefore preferred; this can be arranged by mutual agreement.
