Le Grand Foulard Armchair

Le Grand Foulard is crafted from wooden planks that fell out of use starting around 2004 due to European road safety regulations. These rules imposed requirements regarding, among other things, splinter safety in collisions and visibility through reflective materials, causing this type of red-and-white painted wood to be discarded en masse. A large quantity of this material was found in a meadow, visibly greyed and weathered by prolonged exposure to the elements.
This armchair is the most intensively processed object in the series. The originally six-meter-long planks were first sawn into red and white pieces, then into strips four centimeters wide. After that, the construction began: a meticulous process of restructuring and placement. The distinctive line between red and white was created by draping an actual grand foulard (a large cloth) over and inside the frame; the resulting shape was transferred to the wood. Red and white panels were sawn exactly along this line and fit together like a puzzle.
The armchair is the result of research into comfortable seating on hard material. The basic configuration with seat, backrest, and armrests was repeatedly adjusted over the course of a year. Only after curves, dimensions, angles of inclination, and relative proportions had been determined did the final design of the armchair emerge.
Technique used
Le Grand Foulard is manufactured using traditional artisanal techniques. The slats and panels are joined with dominoes (flat dowels) and glue, all corners are mitered, and no sawn end grain is visible anywhere. Based on the design, the miter angle was set at 47°. The goal of this method was to create a construction that is technically optimal and guarantees a very long lifespan. Series
Together with two other armchairs, Le Grand Foulard forms a trio showcasing various possibilities of recycled material. Later, the series was expanded with a model in MDF. This model was offered as a small canvas to the Rotterdam graffiti collective Lastplak, which provided the object with a distinctive visual language.
Packaging and transport
Packaging is not included. A suitable solution would be a wooden crate. Collection from the studio is therefore preferred; this can be arranged in consultation.
