Product description
Antoni Clavé (1913–2005) École de Paris, 1956 Original color lithograph by Antoni Clavé, created in 1956 and printed by Mourlot in Paris for Galerie Charpentier. This composition is listed in the artist's catalogue raisonné of graphic works under reference Llorens n°69. It is a poster before lettering, from an edition of 200 copies. The presented copy has the sought-after particularity of being hand-signed in pencil by Antoni Clavé in the lower right margin and numbered 168/200 in pencil in the lower left margin. The composition also includes the artist's signature in the plate. Artist: Antoni Clavé (1913–2005) Title: École de Paris Year: 1956 Technique: original color lithograph / poster before lettering Paper: Arches vellum Printer: Mourlot, Paris Publisher / exhibition: Galerie Charpentier, Paris Edition: 200 copies Numbering: 168/200 in pencil Signature: hand-signed in pencil by the artist + signature in the plate Sheet dimensions: 76 × 52 cm Reference: Llorens n°69 Framing: work sold unframed Created in 1956, this lithograph belongs to a particularly important period in Clavé's career, the year the artist received the UNESCO prize for engraving at the XXVIII Venice Biennale. The composition already possesses several essential characteristics of his plastic language: fragmentation of forms, superposition of colors, graphic signs, and tension between figuration and abstraction. Condition Good to very good overall condition given the age of the work. Some slight undulations and handling marks are visible, mainly in the margins and on the reverse. The lithographed composition is well preserved. Detailed photographs and those of the reverse are an integral part of the condition description. About Antoni Clavé Spanish painter, engraver, and sculptor based in France, Antoni Clavé (1913–2005) is one of the important figures in post-war European art. His work gradually evolved from expressive figuration towards a more abstract language, based on material, signs, collages, and superimpositions. His graphic work holds an important place in his production, particularly through his collaboration with major Parisian lithographic workshops.
