This antique woven bamboo suitcase is a travel trunk with a domed lid, wooden braces and metal catches. It originates from China, from the early twentieth century, when woven bamboo was used for light, sturdy luggage. Bamboo suitcases accompanied journeys for their lightness and strength, with a woven structure braced at edges and corners. Their domed lid allowed more volume to be packed. The body is hand-woven in bamboo fibre over a wooden structure, with reinforcing strips painted red and green, metal corners and catches, and side handles. The interior keeps its paper lining. The patina is warm, of a honey tone, with wear consistent with use at edges and handles. The surface reads authentic, with no restoration to mask it. Today it serves as a piece of character, a tidy box or a stackable case beside a sofa. It fits vintage, wabi-sabi and eclectic interiors, where it brings natural texture and a travel narrative.
