Rare Antique Tribal Wooden Mahakala Temple Fronton – Himalayan Region – 19th Century – With Original Paper Temple Seal Specifications: 32 cm high | 24 cm wide | Weight: 600 grams (Extremely bone-dry antique hardwood) A fascinating and extremely rare antique hand-carved wooden tribal temple fronton / protective mask of the wrathful deity Mahakala (or local Dharmapala temple guardian) from the Himalayan region (Tibet, Nepal or Bhutan). This intriguing object dates from the 19th century (or older) and is in a fabulously time-worn, unrestored condition. Thanks to its immense age, the solid wood has completely dried out over the decades, which explains its remarkably light weight of just 600 grams. Raw Tribal Symbolism & Spiritual Function This powerful wooden panel was carved with primitive hand tools from a single tree trunk and historically served as an active gate or altar guardian to repel negative energies with brute force: The All-Seeing Third Eye: Centered on the forehead is the prominent, deeply carved spiritual third eye, symbolizing absolute Buddhist wisdom and the penetration of all external illusions. The Deterring Wrath: The stepped headdress/crown and the wide-open, toothed mouth with the openwork corners give the mask a fabulous, apotropaic (evil-averting) appearance. It is designed to anchor an atmosphere of absolute spiritual security at the entrance of high-end interiors or galleries. Unique Consecration Document on the Reverse The reverse side of this object provides irrefutable, museum-quality evidence of long-term ritual temple use: Original Paper Temple Seal: Centered on the hand-hewn reverse is an authentic, deeply weathered, and handmade paper document. This historical seal was applied by monks as registration or consecration (animation) of the temple guardian and contains antique ink and oil stains. Honest Signs of Age: The front shows a deep, layered patina of burnt incense soot and natural tree resin lacquer. The deep, vertical shrinkage cracks show the thoroughly dry structure of the antique wood. On the right flank are the two original, hand-drilled mounting holes.
