Estimated value: €3,000 – €4,500 This impressive Buddha statue originates from Burma (Myanmar) and is carved in the Mandalay tradition. The Buddha is seated in the bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture that symbolizes the moment of enlightenment. The serene gaze, broad shoulders, and stable posture give the statue a powerful yet tranquil appearance. The statue is carved from solid hardwood and was originally covered with red lacquer and gold leaf. Small mirror-glass inlays are placed in the robe, a traditional Burmese technique that reflected the light of candles and oil lamps in temples. Some of these inlays are still visible. Over the years, parts of the lacquer and gilding have worn off, which actually gives the statue an authentic temple appearance. The surface clearly shows that this is an object that has been used and cherished for a long time. With its size and weight, this Buddha statue has a strong presence and makes an impressive piece for an interior, meditation space, or collection of Asian art.
