A box. Just a box. But with that particular density given by objects that have passed through time without trying to please. The sheet metal is thick, the lid fits snugly, the grab handle is hand-forged. The tab clasp, slightly deformed by the years, still opens effortlessly. The exterior, painted dark brown-green, bears all the marks of prolonged use. The paint has flaked, rust has worked its way into the corners, the surface has taken on an almost leather-like texture. But it's the interior that surprises. Oxidation has developed an extraordinary patina within, golden, silvery, almost mineral, like a geographical map or a lunar surface. An unexpected spectacle in such an understated object. This type of box was used to store documents, salt, tobacco, small tools. It was useful, discreet, present. It still is.
