An impressive antique Shakyamuni Buddha, 56 cm high, cast in a heavy copper alloy and originating from the Tibetan-Himalayan tradition. Weighing 14.3 kg, the sculpture has a powerful physical presence, while its serene facial expression and refined hand gestures radiate a striking tranquility. The Buddha sits in meditation on an intricately crafted lotus base. The elongated earlobes, high ushnisha, stylized hair curls, and richly chased robe lines connect the sculpture to the artistic traditions of the Himalayan region.
Antique Craftsmanship with Character
The floral decorations along the robe are hand-chased and show subtle differences in depth and line work. The small irregularities of traditional handcraft are also visible around the hands, bracelets, robe folds, and lotus base. The warm golden surface shows wear, dark residues in recessed areas, and numerous fine scratches from use and polishing. Especially around the hair, engravings, and hard-to-reach areas, the historical layering is well-preserved.
Examined with Microscopy and UV Light
The sculpture was examined with 50× microscopy and 365 nm UV light. On the inside, old copper oxidation, mineral deposits, and residues of organic material from the original casting core were found. These characteristics are consistent with traditional lost-wax casting and support the antique dating. The Buddha and lotus base were cast separately and joined during the original production process. Old casting corrections are also present, showing the same historical surface aging as the surrounding areas.
Shakyamuni – Protection and Fearlessness
Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha and represents insight, enlightenment, and the transmission of Buddhist teachings. The raised right hand with the palm facing outwards forms the Abhaya Mudra, a gesture of reassurance, protection, and fearlessness. Due to its size, weight, and powerful aura, this is a sculpture that can independently command a space. A special collector's item for enthusiasts of antique Buddhist art and historical sculptures from the Himalayan region.
Condition
Good antique condition with clear signs of age and use, including surface wear, oxidation, old casting irregularities, minor scratches, and dark patina in recessed areas.
