Tibetan damaru – ritual hand drum

Tantric ritual instrument
Compact Tibetan damaru with two opposing drumheads and a dark wooden frame. Such hand drums are used within Tibetan Buddhism in tantric rituals and recitation. By rotating the drum in the hand, the weights attached to cords strike both hides.
Original leather fittings
With this specimen, parts of the old leather carrying and striking cords have been preserved, including a weighted striking element. The hides and leather show strong signs of use and age. Both drumheads have central losses/openings; the leather fitting is dry, weathered, and fragmented in places.
Catalog Note
A small but distinctive ritual object with an untouched, dark use patina. Its compact form and simple wooden construction place this object among the smaller Tibetan damaru types from the late 19th to early 20th century.
