Object Details Object: Seated Shakyamuni Buddha Origin: Thailand Period: Rattanakosin, 19th century Dating: approx. 1800–1870 Material: bronze / copper alloy Surface: old lacquer gilding with traces of gold leaf Mudra: Bhumisparsha / Maravijaya Dimensions: H 36.5 × W 26.7 × D 10 cm Weight: 5.8 kg Thai Buddha from the Rattanakosin Period A substantially cast 19th-century Thai bronze Buddha, seated in meditation on a tiered lotus base. The right hand descends over the knee in Bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture with which Shakyamuni invokes the earth as a witness to his victory over Mara. The left hand rests with an open palm in the lap. The sculpture combines characteristics of the Rattanakosin period with a clear nod to the older Sukhothai sculptural language: a slender torso, long arms, downcast eyes, elongated earlobes, small spiral curls, and a flame-shaped ushnisha. However, the broad, architecturally constructed base with a beaded rim and stylized lotus leaves clearly places the sculpture within the later Thai tradition. Old Lacquer and Gold Gilding Over large areas of the bronze, a historical gold-colored surface has been preserved. Macro-shots of damaged areas reveal a dark lacquer ground beneath the gold. In some places, the gold layer ends with thin, sharp edges and small lacunae, consistent with the traditional Thai technique where gold leaf was applied to a prepared lacquer layer. The surface is therefore not described as fire-gilded. The visible composition is characteristic of old lacquer and gold leaf gilding, with natural differences between protected areas and parts that have been more heavily worn by touch and and use. Traditional Hollow Casting The sculpture is traditionally hollow cast. The open underside shows substantial remnants of the original earth/clay core, old deposits, and localized blue-green copper oxidation along the inner rim. The irregular casting interior is not smoothly finished in a modern way and forms an important technical component of the object. Condition Antique condition with wear to lacquer and gilding, dark deposits, small scratches, localized oxidation, and surface lacunae. The differences in sheen and gold coverage follow the areas of use and wear on the sculpture. The old core remnants in the open base have been preserved. Not re-gilded or cosmetically evenly finished.
