Antique Thai Bronze Buddha Head – ca. 1900 This antique bronze Buddha head originates from Thailand and most likely dates from the period circa 1880–1920. It is a finely cast example with a serene facial expression, natural wear, and a richly developed old patina. Although the original body has been lost, the head still possesses a powerful spiritual aura and forms a remarkable collector's item for enthusiasts of authentic Southeast Asian Buddhist art. Dimensions Height: 18 cm Width: 12 cm Depth: 16.5 cm Weight: 1.5 kg Description The face displays the classic Thai interpretation of the historical Buddha with softly arched eyelids, a refined nose, and a tranquil smile. The carefully modeled hair curls are individually sculpted in spiral patterns, a common characteristic of traditional Thai bronze sculptures from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The natural wear, old oxidation, and subtle color variations in the surface have developed over more than a century. In several places, traces of an older finish are still visible, while the interior shows a characteristic old patina that exhibits a green fluorescence exclusively under UV light. This reaction is not soluble with acetone and provides an interesting indication of historical surface development rather than a modern coating. The casting quality is high, with subtle manual finishing of the hair curls and facial features. The irregular inner edge and traditional construction are consistent with hand-cast temple art from Thailand around 1900. Symbolism The Buddha's head symbolizes wisdom, inner peace, and enlightenment. The closed eyes refer to meditation and spiritual insight, while the gentle smile represents compassion and balance.
