Product description
This antique sideboard in pine wood presents a pierced apron carved with scrolls and hand-forged iron ring pulls. Originates from northern China, from the Qing dynasty, where local timber was joined with mortise and tenon and finished in lacquer or oil paint. The low two- or three-door sideboard is among the most widespread storage pieces of northern China. It stood against the wall of the main room, held tableware, clothing and grain, and its height allowed the top to serve as a work surface and a domestic altar. The carcass is solid wood joined with mortise and tenon, without a single screw. The doors are panels on a frame, turning on pivots cut into the stile itself rather than on metal hinges. The pulls are hand-forged iron rings on backplates. The lower apron is pierced and carved with opposed scrolls, and the doors carry a shaped, serpentine outline. The timber has been stripped back to bare wood and has taken a warm honey tone, with sunken knots and grain raised by use. The joints have opened slightly and the edges are rounded. It is the natural finish that bare-wood interiors look for today. It works as a dining room sideboard, a low living room cabinet or a hall console. Its length and contained height make it easy to place beneath a window or along a wide corridor, and the bare timber suits wabi-sabi, japandi and contemporary rustic interiors.
