Product description
This antique sideboard in elm wood features three upper drawers aligned and three lower doors with raised central field. It originates from eastern China, from the late Qing dynasty, where elm was worked using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. In the domestic furniture of eastern China, sideboards combined a row of drawers for small items and lower doors for bulkier pieces — tableware, household linens, folded textiles. The clear separation between drawer band and door band belongs to the traditional Chinese organising logic. The piece is conceived for a main room or a ritual dining room. The body is built in solid elm. The top is a continuous board and slightly overhangs the sides. Beneath it, three long drawers with small circular hand-forged iron pulls. Below, three identical doors with a perimeter frame and a raised central field. The flanks carry framed panels and rest on straight legs. The construction is traditional Chinese mortise-and-tenon, without metal fasteners. The patina keeps a light blond tone with visible elm grain. The top surface shows the natural figure of the wood, with small longitudinal cracks and soft variations of warm tone. The hardware presents stable oxidation. The surface bears no added lacquer or paint: expression rests entirely on the worked wood. With a height of 96 cm and a length of just over two metres, this sideboard is a piece of imposing presence in a contemporary interior. It works as a central piece in a dining room, as storage in a large living room, or as low cabinetry in an open kitchen. It fits wabi-sabi, japandi, contemporary rustic and Asian-inspired interiors.
