Antique sideboard in elm wood, from China, with geometric carving. Originates from the tradition of Chinese domestic furniture of the Qing Dynasty, when elm was carved in relief with repeated motifs covering the entire visible surface. This low, elongated sideboard was placed along a wall of the main room, used to store tableware and household objects. Built from solid elm wood using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, the front is arranged in seven small doors fitted with ring-shaped iron pulls, standing on short, sturdy legs. The continuous relief carving combines a lattice of interlocking diamonds with circular medallions at the ends, a geometric repertoire typical of Chinese decorative cabinetmaking, worked with particular care across the entire surface. The patina, golden and even, brings out the relief of the carving and retains the natural wear of generations of use. In an eclectic or maximalist living room or entryway, it works as a low sideboard of strong presence, its carving turning the piece into a focal point.
