Product description
This antique salon table in walnut wood presents an oval top with a shaped outline over a four-armed central pedestal. Originates from Central Europe, from the last quarter of the nineteenth century, where walnut was worked with mortise-and-tenon joinery and finished in wax.
The pedestal table was the piece that organised the Central European bourgeois salon: it stood beneath the lamp, ringed by chairs, and served for needlework, reading and receiving. Its shaped outline and scrolled arms answer the Historicist taste that governed regional cabinetmaking after 1870.
The top is finished with a moulded edge following the undulating contour. The four arms spring from a turned shaft with a finial and sweep outward to shaped feet. The carving is done by hand, with slight asymmetries between arms.
The walnut has taken a warm, reddish tone under its old finish, with uneven sheen. The top shows rings, fine scratches and one joint that has opened at the centre. The wear is distributed naturally, with no repaints or visible repairs.
A salon table that works beside a sofa, in a bay window, or as a hall table. The warmth of the walnut and its curved silhouette contrast well with plain upholstery and with contemporary interiors seeking a note of fine timber.
