This antique painted blue chest in solid pine, with original turquoise paint and wrought-iron lock plate, is a folk piece from Central Europe around 1900.
Painted chests from Central Europe were central pieces of the rural household trousseau: brides and grooms received them as marriage furniture, decorated with flowers, initials or folk motifs. They held clothes, textiles and the family’s most valued personal items. The vibrant palette — blue, green, red — reflected Alpine and Balkan popular taste.
The case is built from pine boards joined with reinforced mitre, with a hinged top on iron straps and a central lock. The turquoise paint sits over an older green base that surfaces in small losses and on edges. A low perimeter moulding completes the silhouette. The turned feet are a recent addition that gently raises the piece.
The patina shows a vivid surface, with frank wear revealing the green base and the warm wood at rub points. The central lock plate keeps its stable oxidation and full character. No modern restoration to the paint: the chromatic reading is entirely original.
It works as a piece of character at the foot of a bed, a trunk-coffee table in a rustic-contemporary living room, or an auxiliary seat in an entryway. Its saturated colour fits boho, Alpine, Scandinavian or wabi-sabi interiors that welcome colour as an accent.
