Private sellerProduct description
Beautiful, characterful antique oak secretaire à abattant (drop-front desk). The furniture dates from the mid-19th century (approx. 1840-1860). It is a stately piece of furniture that serves as both a desk and a storage cabinet, a real eye-catcher with a story.
The dimensions are 95 cm wide, 50 cm deep (folded) and 154 cm high.
The key is included and the lock works/turns, but the mechanism will need to be checked to make it work optimally. The slide does not seem to come up enough, so it does not 'catch' properly. The flap now stays up because a piece of paper is slid in on the side.
This piece of furniture carries a special Dutch history and is directly connected to the intellectual and artistic elite of the 19th and 20th centuries. It stood for decades with the Douwes Dekker family and then with Marianne van Boxel, the widow of Robert Douwes Dekker and daughter of the Hague painter Piet van Boxel. Although no official purchase documents from the 19th century have been preserved, this unique family history is transferable through tangible personal belongings and stories.
