Archaic Form and Ritual Use
This hand-carved wooden mask belongs to the folk and shamanistic mask traditions of the Nepalese Middle Hills. The face is austerely and powerfully constructed, with narrow pierced eyes, a long straight nose, and an open mouth. Its reduced form gives the mask a distinctly archaic appearance.
Construction and Surface
The reverse side is deeply hand-hollowed and shows a rough, functional finish. The thick wall, irregular carving marks, and dry, dark patinated surface indicate prolonged use and age. Old wear, small losses, and weathered wood fibers are visible on the edges, nose, mouth, and top.
Condition
Good antique condition with clear signs of use and age, including superficial wear, dry cracks, minor edge damage, and localized material losses. No modern decorative finish visible.
