Product description
Nepalese wooden shaman mask with elongated face
Origin: Nepal, Middle Hills / Himalayas
Dating: approx. 1900–1930
Material: hand-carved wood
Dimensions: H 25 × W 13.5 × D 5 cm
Weight: 400 g
Type: anthropomorphic shamanic face mask
Elongated archaic form
Slender Nepalese mask with a strikingly high forehead, narrow almond-shaped eye openings, powerful nose, and a small open mouth. The soberly modeled features give the object a severe, concentrated expression that is consistent with the shamanic mask traditions of the Nepalese Middle Hills.
Construction and Wear Marks
The reverse side is deeply and completely hand-hollowed out. Along the sides, old attachment holes are visible, in which remnants of the former carrying or hanging cords have been preserved. The interior shows clear chopping and chisel marks and a dark usage patina.
Patina and Condition
The wood bears a deep dark brown to black-brown patina with soft wear around the eyes, nose, mouth, and edges. Local drying cracks and minor historical damage are consistent with the object's age. The mask is unrestored.
