Antique Nepalese Shaman Mask from the Himalayas Dimensions: H 24 × W 19 cm Weight: 200 g Material: Wood Period: First half to mid-20th century Origin: Nepal, Himalayas / Middle Hills Depiction: Anthropomorphic face mask Archaic face shape This simply carved wooden mask features a broad oval face with openwork eyes and mouth and a powerfully protruding nose. The almost complete absence of decoration gives the face a direct, archaic expression characteristic of the folk art of the Nepalese Himalayas. Shamanistic Tradition of Nepal The mask is placed within the shamanistic mask traditions of the Nepalese Himalayas and the Middle Hills. Without documented provenance, we do not attribute it more specifically to Rai, Magar, or Gurung. The cataloging therefore intentionally remains with the geographically and stylistically defensible description: a Nepalese anthropomorphic shaman mask. Surface and Condition The wood bears a heavily darkened and weathered surface with clear traces of age and use. Small openings along the edge indicate a former attachment or carrying structure. The bottom edge shows old chips and material loss. The back and side views show the overall construction and condition.
