Antique Nepalese Shaman Mask with Teeth

Dating: approx. 1900–1930
Material: hand-carved wood
Dimensions: H 27 × W 16 cm

Powerful archaic expression
This heavily crafted wooden mask belongs to the ritual and folk art traditions of the Nepalese Middle Hills. The round pierced eyes, sturdy protruding nose, wide mouth with incised teeth, and the rhythmically grooved upper part give the mask a distinct, powerful presence.
Carving and Surface
The front is deeply carved and features spiral-shaped cheek and temple motifs on both sides. The back is roughly and deeply hollowed out. The surface shows a dark, long-developed patina with wear, minor losses, open drying cracks, and weathered wood fibers.
Condition
Good antique condition with clear signs of age and use. A vertical drying crack runs through the front and is also visible on the underside. Furthermore, there are old cracks, edge damage, and localized material losses. These signs are consistent with age and use.
