Nepalese wooden shaman mask with open mouth and teeth Origin: Nepal, Middle Hills / Himalayas Dating: ca. 1880–1920 Material: hand-carved wood Dimensions: H 21.5 × W 25.5 × D 10 cm Weight: 1.1 kg Type: anthropomorphic shamanic face mask Powerful ritual expression Broad and heavily crafted Nepalese mask with small round eye openings, a long narrow nose, and a large open mouth with individually carved teeth. The ears are sculpted plastically on both sides. The compact, powerful face has the disquieting expression characteristic of old shamanic masks from the Nepalese Middle Hills. Construction and signs of wear The mask is carved from a thick block of wood and deeply hollowed out at the back. Old rope remnants still pass through the side openings and belong to the former wearing or attachment construction. The back shows heavy chopping and chisel marks, clearly indicating the manual manufacturing process. Patina and condition The wood has a deep dark brown to black-brown use patina with old drying cracks, worn edges, and minor historical losses. The teeth and mouth edge show local remnants of dark and reddish-brown color. The mask is unrestored and retains its powerful ethnographic character.
