Painted Nepalese Shaman Mask from the Middle Hills Origin: Nepal, Middle Hills / Himalayas Dating: approx. 1900–1930 Material: Hand-carved wood with polychrome pigment remnants Dimensions: H 27 × W 22 × D 4 cm Weight: 300 g Type: Anthropomorphic shamanic face mask Red, black, and white pigment This expressive Nepalese mask is distinguished by its preserved antique painting. Red pigment layers dominate the face, with black areas over the forehead and powerful arched eyebrows; remnants of light, whitish contouring are visible along the eyebrows, nose, ears, and mouth. Face Shape and Construction The face has round eye openings, a long angularly carved nose, an open mouth, and separately sculpted ears. The back is entirely hand-hollowed and shows clear chopping and chisel marks. A hanging ring is present on the back. Patina and Condition The original color layer is heavily worn and locally disappeared, creating a layered surface of wood, pigment, and dark usage patina. The edges show old wear and small material losses. The mask has not been repainted or decoratively restored.
