Antique Nepalese Mañjuśrī – 19th century Dimensions H 57 × W 35.5 cm Weight 10.1 kg Material Bronze / copper alloy Period 19th century Origin Nepal, Kathmandu Valley Depiction Mañjuśrī, bodhisattva of transcendent wisdom Attributes Sword of wisdom and lotus SKU 781 Mañjuśrī, Bodhisattva of Wisdom A large and richly detailed Nepalese bronze depiction of Mañjuśrī, dating from the 19th century. With a height of 57 cm and a weight of over 10 kg, this is a monumental example of metal casting art from the Kathmandu Valley. Mañjuśrī is recognizable by the raised sword of wisdom, with which ignorance is cut through. The left hand is held before the chest and was connected to a lotus that ran up along the shoulder. The composition is further characterized by elaborate jewelry, a high crown, and a richly openwork lotus base with powerful makara and vegetal ornamentation. Casting and Patina The sculpture is composed of individually cast and assembled parts. The complex openwork ornamentation, the powerful modeling, and the visible historical connections illustrate the labor-intensive manufacturing of the sculpture. The surface has a dark, age-developed patina with local wear and traces of a warm golden-colored surface. Condition The sculpture is offered in its historical, unrestored condition. The lotus that originally ran up along the left shoulder is partially preserved; the upper part is lost. Historical losses and signs of wear are also visible on some openwork ornamental elements. We have deliberately not reconstructed or restored these missing parts.
