Product description
An impressive antique Nepalese bronze statue depicting Shakyamuni Buddha in the classical Bhumisparsha mudra. Buddha touches the earth at the moment of enlightenment, a powerful gesture symbolising determination, spiritual awakening and inner strength. His calm expression and balanced posture give the sculpture a serene yet commanding presence. Cast in substantial bronze, the statue was originally richly fire-gilded. Historic gold remains clearly visible on the face, chest and within the folds of the robe, where it has worn naturally over time. This contrast between the surviving gilding and exposed bronze gives the figure depth and an authentically aged character. The robe is finely decorated with a lively repeated pattern, beautifully contrasting with the smooth modelling of Buddha’s skin. A harmonious lotus pedestal provides the sculpture with a stable and balanced foundation. Statues of this type were made in Nepal for household altars and personal devotion. The naturally aged interior and absence of evident modern production traces are consistent with traditional craftsmanship from the second half of the 19th century.
