Product description
This richly decorated Nepalese incense burner is crafted in the form of a Buddhist chaitya or stupa. The ritual object was manufactured in the Kathmandu Valley and combines Newar metalwork with Buddhist architecture and protective figures. The detachable dome features multiple seated Buddha figures in separate niches and is crowned by a tall, layered spire. Around the square base are stylized makaras and richly elaborated floral ornaments. The openwork dome and smoke vents allowed incense smoke to exit all around the shrine. Clear old soot and burn marks are present on the inside. These traces of use confirm the original ritual function of the object. The surface has a deeply developed dark patina, local corrosion, remnants of gold-colored finish, and red pigment. The irregular manual casting, long-term surface wear, and residue on the inside are consistent with an authentic old ritual utilitarian object from Nepal.
