Product description
An authentic, hand-painted ceramic vase from Safi, Morocco. This piece dates from the early to mid-20th century (1930s/1950s) and is strongly influenced by the European Art Deco style of the renowned Boujemaa Lamali period. The vase is decorated with a stylized maritime motif of fish and shells in a striking palette of yellow, cobalt blue, and black. The exterior features a characteristic and fine crackle glaze. The base displays the distinctive unsigned, reddish-brown terracotta foot ring, confirming its origin in the pottery region of Safi. Unlike European factories, which rigorously marked every object with decoration numbers, marks, and stamps, the vast majority of Moroccan utilitarian pottery from the early to mid-20th century was not signed at all. The vases were handmade in local cooperatives on the Colline des Potiers (the potters' hill) in Safi. Good vintage condition with a beautiful age patina and light, characteristic glaze wear on the foot ring (see photos).
