Private sellerProduct description
This is an antique Moroccan ceramic inkwell, traditionally known as a palamus. Originating from Fes, a city with a rich history of pottery, this piece is a tangible example of North African decorative arts and traditional craftsmanship.
Constructed from ceramic, the inkwell features a distinctive cobalt blue and white glaze. The surface is hand-painted with repeating spiral motifs, a pattern characteristic of Fes pottery. Its functional design consists of a central reservoir for ink, surrounded by eight smaller cylindrical wells intended to hold reed pens, or calamus. The unglazed base reveals the underlying earthenware, and the entire object has a substantial, handcrafted feel.
The piece carries a distinct character that reflects its history and utilitarian origins. The glaze shows variations inherent to handmade production, and the surface has developed a patina over time. Its condition is consistent with that of a well-used antique object, retaining its structural integrity and decorative appeal.
As a decorative object, this palamus adds a point of historical interest to a desk, library shelf, or console table. It integrates well into interiors with Bohemian, Rustic, or eclectic design themes, serving as a conversation piece or a unique holder for small brushes or pens.
