Product description
This antique low table with drawers in pine wood is a Chinese kang table with four drawers and iron ring pulls. It originates from northern China, from the Qing dynasty, where local pine was worked using mortise-and-tenon joinery. Tables of this height were used on the kang, the heated platform at the centre of the house in the northern provinces. People ate, slept and received visitors on it. The table gave a working surface and storage at seated height. The top is solid pine, with a square edge and breadboard ends. Four aligned drawers of equal size run beneath it. The apron is cut in a wave profile and the side panels rest on stirrup feet joined by an open stretcher. The surface retains traces of the original dark lacquer over the open grain of the pine. The drawers show a red-lacquered interior, far brighter than the outside. Wear concentrates on the top and along the drawer fronts. Its low height places it as a coffee table, an occasional bench or a living-room low cabinet. It fits wabi-sabi and japandi interiors, where bare wood brings calm.
