Product description
Antique low table in elm wood, from China and the Qing Dynasty, with an inset top. Originates from northern China, from the late 19th century, where elm was worked using the mortise-and-tenon joinery typical of classical furniture.
Pieces of this size accompanied low seating in the traditional Chinese home, serving to hold the tea service or small objects.
The top, with an inset central panel of radial grain, rests on a moulded waist and four curved legs joined by a low double humpback stretcher, following the classical construction of Chinese stools.
The wood shows a natural, light-toned patina, with surface marks of use and small losses at the corners of the top typical of the passage of time.
In a contemporary bedroom or living room, it works as a low table or side table, bringing the subtle play of the inset grain alongside the warmth of aged elm.
