Product description
This antique low carved sideboard in elm wood features a front with central drawers and carved side panels: one with the shou (壽, longevity) character pierced and the other with floral motifs polychromed in blue and green. It originates from northern China, from the late Qing dynasty, where elm was worked using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. Chinese low sideboards from the late Qing period combined functional storage and decorative load. The presence of the pierced shou (壽) character on the side panels is an identifying trait: it belongs to the core of auspicious characters along with fu (fortune) and xi (happiness), and its presence in domestic furniture expressed wishes of longevity for the family. The body is built in solid elm. The front combines central drawers with hand-forged iron pulls and two carved side panels: the left panel with floral motifs and the right with the pierced shou character. The panels show traces of paint in blue and green over the raw ground of the wood. The construction is traditional Chinese mortise-and-tenon, without metal fasteners. The elm patina keeps a warm brown tone with the natural figure of the grain visible. The carved panels show softened traces of cobalt blue and malachite green polychromy that highlight the pierced relief. The top surface keeps small longitudinal cracks and minor use marks. The iron hardware presents stable oxidation. With its 189 cm length and low 55 cm height, this sideboard works as an anchor piece in living rooms, bedrooms and entrances. As low cabinetry for television, its height allows hanging the screen above. It suits wabi-sabi, japandi, contemporary rustic and Asian-inspired interiors.
