This antique low cabinet in pine wood is a Chinese kang cabinet with three drawers, two side doors and an open central shelf. It originates from northern China, from the Qing dynasty, where pine was joined with mortise and tenon and protected with red lacquer.
The composition divides the front into three distinct functions: what is kept shut goes behind the doors, what is small and frequent in the drawers, and what is used daily stays in sight in the central recess. It is a domestic hierarchy, not a decorative one.
The case is solid pine with rounded upper corners and legs continued from the stiles. The drawers retain their original bottoms and are dovetailed. The pulls are iron rings on rosettes and the apron beneath the drawers is cut in a gentle curve.
Of the original red lacquer, what survives is mainly the ground of the central recess, sheltered from handling; elsewhere it has gone and the pine shows in a darkened honey tone. The top retains marks of use and one open joint along its length.
In a light interior, the open central recess lightens the piece visually and avoids the effect of a solid block.
