Product description
This antique low cabinet in solid elm, with two doors and a geometric fretwork apron, is a domestic piece from northern China around 1950. It bears no maker’s mark and is described by typology and region. Two-door low cabinets with a fretted lower apron were common pieces in rural Chinese homes, serving as a living-room chest or narrow sideboard. The openwork apron ventilated the interior and lightened the visual weight of the case. The frame is built with blind mortise-and-tenon joinery. The flat, broad-panelled doors swing on pivots and close with original wrought-iron ring pulls. Below the doors, a geometric fretwork apron crosses the front and completes the craftsmanlike reading. The patina shows the characteristic pale tone of elm stripped by time, with deep grain and darker zones along edges where use has left its mark. The fretwork retains all its original joints and a fine carving rhythm. It works as a narrow sideboard, a low entry cabinet or an auxiliary piece in a generous bathroom. Its fretted apron and contained volume sit naturally in wabi-sabi, japandi or rustic-contemporary interiors, bringing craft detail without clutter.
