This antique longcase clock case in pine wood retains its original paint over a grey-green ground, with hand-painted floral sprays and marbled cornice and base. Originates from Central Europe, from the middle of the nineteenth century, where pine was worked with mortise-and-tenon joinery and painted in imitation of finer woods. Longcase clock cases were built separately from their movements: the clockmaker supplied the works and the dial, while the local cabinetmaker raised the case to regional taste. This one comes without movement or dial, so the body now reads as a tall, narrow cabinet. The body resolves in three stages: an upper hood with a round-arched glazed door, a trunk with a panelled door, and a moulded plinth. Hinges and catch are iron. The interior is left in bare pine. The green has lost saturation and lets the ground show through along the edges. The reddish marbling of the cornice and base keeps its hand-drawn veining, now faded. Scratches around the glazed door record decades of winding. Its narrow height resolves an awkward corner, a corridor or the recess beside a fireplace. It can serve as a tall display case with the hood lit from within, or stay closed as a sculptural piece of folk art.
